Concrete is subject to breakdown, whether from the constant water exposure of sprinklers or extremely heavy loads wearing away at the foundation. Potholes are a nuisance that if left unrepaired can lead to major damage to both roads and cars.

To repair a concrete pothole, use Roklin’s FlexSet concrete repair product. FlexSet provides a fast-setting repair with almost no interruption of service.

The repairs must cure quickly to avoid long-term work disruption. The completed repair must support heavy loading, withstand vibration and thermal expansion and contraction, and hold up under continuous traffic without cracking, spalling, or loss of adhesion. The FlexSet repair composition simplifies concrete repair because everything that is needed is supplied in a 5 gallon container.

Repair kits include a polymer coated, naturally rounded sand mixture, “A” and “B” liquids, plus a topping sand. The sand is polymer coated to be compatible with other constituents in the product, and forms a high strength, flexible polymer concrete when combined with the liquid polymer. These pre-weighed repair kits are complete and simple to use for large or small repairs. With no measuring or weighing required, reliable results are easily achieved. These repair kits are gaining acceptance by road and bridge maintenance crews because durable repairs are easily achieved with minimal surface preparation and virtually no concrete removal in the highway environment. FlexSet was determined to be a good fit for this warehouse repair. This flexible polymer concrete does not provide high compressive strength when tested by the conventionally accepted test methods because it deforms when heavily loaded. However, when surrounded by high compressive strength concrete, the movement is confined and the load support equals the strength of the adjacent pavement. The failed warehouse floor repair was simply dug out, and blown dry. The polymer kit was mixed and poured directly into the open trough over preplaced 3/4″ clean, dry aggregate. The solidified repair is ground to create a smooth transition perfectly matched the surrounding floor grade. After grinding the surface is coated with a sealer. In four hours the warehouse floor repair is complete and opened to forklift traffic. The repairs were completed five years ago and still look great.

A Southern California Retail Distribution 500,000 square foot facility, dating from the early 1970′s, had a built in rail delivery system which, for the 1970′s, was considered state of the art. However, as innovation and “just in time inventory” caught up with the facility, the rail delivery system became obsolete. The warehouse moved to the more traditional, and ultimately more efficient, forklift delivery system.

Concrete Repair

Forklifts moved the merchandise from station to station and ultimately to the loading dock. Forklifts were an improvement over rail delivery, but the remains of that outdated system was not that easily forgotten. The embedded rails used to ferry the inventory around were a problem. Now that forklifts were driving their 10,000-pound loads along with their own weight of almost 8,000 pounds, repeated crossing of the rails were seriously shortening tire life. The rails were removed to stop tire damage and to eliminate the tripping hazards and liability risks they created removing the rails posed no problem for the warehouse maintenance crew.

Providing a long-term concrete repair was, however, another matter. Once the rails were dug out to a depth of about six inches and a width of between 4” and 12” the resulting trough was filled with rapid setting concrete. Next day the forklifts resumed their frantic pace of multiple crossings over the newly poured repair. It wasn’t long before the repair started to break up and work its way loose.
